Comment on WVU Plans to Completely Cut World Languages Department by Viktoria Ironpride https://www.languagemagazine.com/2023/08/15/wvu-announces-plan-to-dissolve-entire-department-of-world-languages-literatures-and-linguistics/#comment-670537 Fri, 18 Aug 2023 17:55:47 +0000 https://www.languagemagazine.com/?p=143242#comment-670537 I couldn’t agree more with dropping foreign language! I should imagine that of all required courses, foreign language is the most unpopular, and that most students take it because they are forced to. All people (and I do mean all) with whom I have spoken who have taken four semesters of any foreign language cannot speak it now, and usually forgot most of what they did manage to learn in about six months at least. Glad to see it go!

As a language enthusiast and educator, I’ve always been fascinated by the cognitive benefits of bilingualism, and your article brilliantly highlights the scientific evidence supporting these advantages.

Comment on Building Biliteracy by Miguel Grate https://www.languagemagazine.com/2023/07/20/building-biliteracy/#comment-670485 Mon, 24 Jul 2023 08:59:17 +0000 https://www.languagemagazine.com/?p=143069#comment-670485 I started learning the language because my family lived in the UK for some time. But now we have been living in another country for a long time. It was absolutely easy for me to learn the language, and I asked my family why I had less difficulty than others. They told me about relatives who lived in the UK. And even for illustration purposes, my mom created our family tree on storyboardthat.com using the convenient family tree maker template on this service. This article is very interesting to me, but I would like to read more about how our previous generations influence language learning. That would be very interesting too.

Comment on Zelenskyy Promotes English in Ukraine by Ivan Ivanovich https://www.languagemagazine.com/2023/07/06/zelenskyy-promotes-english-in-ukraine/#comment-670472 Thu, 13 Jul 2023 20:21:06 +0000 https://www.languagemagazine.com/?p=142950#comment-670472 It should also be noted that many Russian-speakers left after Ukraine’s counter-offensive in Kharkhiv last year because they had worked for the Russians. I guess they knew the Ukrainians wouldn’t treat them kindly (not that revenge by Ukrainians on Russians would be reported in the mainstream press…)

Comment on NC Governor Declares ‘State of Emergency for Public Education’ by Tonny https://www.languagemagazine.com/2023/07/04/nc-governor-declares-state-of-emergency-for-public-education/#comment-670471 Mon, 10 Jul 2023 12:41:13 +0000 https://www.languagemagazine.com/?p=142923#comment-670471 It’s very strange to read this, to be honest, because education is one of the most important things in a state, which must be at a high level to maintain a high level of the state itself. With the above, it is strange for me to read such an article, but it’s good that I have already completed my training and not just one, now I am engaged in video editing and am now learning a green screen remover tool to have even more functionality in my arsenal. I can also say this: God forbid that the level of education drops, it will lead to bad consequences for decades to come.
